CoJack started playing “Fog” by Sduk
jessipedia: hey folks
disk: oh snap everyones here
VYGR: hey jessi
Bo Peep (TNP): Heya.
jessipedia: what’s going on? ready for some interviewing?
VYGR: sure
disk: woot!

jessipedia: ok, well, first of all…What kind of music do you all play here, because I don’t really know what any of those music genres are… : /

digerati: >_< lol
VYGR: We play all sorts of Bass Music, Dubstep that is focused on sub-bass rather than on unbearable loud and screechy mid-range sounds, UK Garage, Grime, UK Funky, House, Juke, Footwork, some Jungle, Liquid DnB and so on.
jessipedia: what differentiates UK Dubstep from US? other than nationality..
VYGR: The love for bass, which means that we use subs to listen to our music and not just laptop speakers. Hah!
Bo Peep (TNP): LOL. FOR THE LOVE OF SUBS! RAWR!
digerati: ‘If your tune sounds like a bunch of power tools at a Home Depot – that’s not bass, that’s not sub, therefore, it’s not dubstep!’ -Joe Nice (UK Dubstep Ambassador)
trees: even tho he’s from the US, he still keeps it real/UK :p “UK dubstep” is just a sort of guideline, we play plenty of good US-based dubstep.
jessipedia: haha, ok. What’s Grime?
VYGR: Grime emerged from South London in the early 2000s as a development or blend of UK Garage, Dancehall, and Hip Hop.
trees: people like dizzee rascal and wiley are considered grime MCs

jessipedia: How did this room get started?

Rola started playing “Follow U - Submerse Remix” by Yogi Feat. Ayah Marar
VYGR: First there was ‘Dubstep Chill - 2step - Bass Music’, the room digerati created. Mad props to you, digerati! A lot of us have spent their early Turntable.fm days & nights in that room. A place for all the Bass Music lovers on here, who wanted to play and listen to Dubstep, but not the kind that is being played in all the other so called ‘Dubstep’ rooms. Then one day I clicked the ‘create new room’ button, more as a test for myself than anything else to be honest, but everyone came over to see what was going on, and now we are still here. I did not expect that at all, it just so happened. Of course I could drop some big names here, but what is also special about this room is the considerable number of guys who produce their own tunes. We got same artists that are relatively well-known in the Bass Music scene.
trees: yepp i am refugee from dig’s room haha
disk: ^
Rola: refugee camp
VYGR: The idea or concept behind it is still the same.
digerati: This was became melting pot of all those in favor of music..BASS music..
disk: We basically started this room as a way to avoid music like “Skrillex” and other artists that are classifed as brostep
Rola: the variety of new producers in here is outrageous

jessipedia: What would you say are the essential songs and artists for this room? Something you would recommend to a noob…

trees: Silkie, Digital Mystikz/Mala
disk: Anything Digital Mystikz
Rola: Submerse :)
Bo Peep (TNP): ^
Loxxie: jkenzo, dj madd, swarms, kryptic minds, clubroot
VYGROf course I could drop some big names here, but what is also special about this room is the considerable number of guys who produce their own tunes. We got same artists that are relatively well-known in the Bass Music scene. Clicks & Whistles, Lunova Labs, The Landwhale, ADP, Dabblr, Lineages, to just name a few. Sorry, I can’t list everyone here. Maybe you should all post your soundcloud links now! :)
Loxxie: burial
digerati: Sigmund just played a work in progress yesterday. Pure quality.
trees: burial definitely. yeah sigmund that tune of yours was amazin
Loxxie: sooo true.
Nokier: i think we can all agree on burial
sigmund void started playing “Aquatique” by Electrosoul System
sigmund void: thanks guys, i appreciate it :)

jessipedia: What is it about this music that keeps you coming back, rather than what’s played in the other Dubstep rooms?

digerati: Quality. Unique. Depth.
trees: it’s the future and the past 8)
Rola: variety
digerati: ^^
Bo Peep (TNP): Because it’s good music, lol. And it’s our music. The Bass Music scene is tight-knit, and always forward thinking.
Nokier: i would say its more of the people that cause me to come back
sigmund void: i’m always hearing new stuff here, it’s all great
Rola: but with all things in common nice full sub bass melodies vocals
Nokier: rola said it well
bentona: I keep coming back because there are so many people in here that are so passionate about bass music. We all want to keep the same vibe but there is always something fresh in here.
Rola: music isnt music with out all those things
VYGR: We are all music addicts. We need our daily fix. There is also a high number of ppl who just come here to listen and to talk. That is why we never needed a bot or a waiting list. Even when there were more than 30 peeps in the room. If you want to play some tunes, just ask and someone will step down for you.

jessipedia: Did any of you know each other outside of tt before joining this room?

trees: no jess
Nokier: i met all these people thru turntable
trees: this room is full of heads though, i’m constantly impressed/humbled
Bo Peep (TNP): ^
sigmund void: i had met jLush at a party in Baltimore last year, later found out she was in this room
jessipedia: oh wow
bezerkeley: First time visiting…. very nice room.
sigmund void: her and bmore are like 20 min from me

jessipedia: Has anyone else metup in real life?

digerati: This room is kind of unifying, in that this music is not often found locally IRL. So we come here, to find like minds!
Rola: yep its like hanging with your buddies in one huge room but all over th country
Bo Peep (TNP): I’m trying to start a Bass Music scene here in Philadelphia, but there’s not much here ate the moment. So I come here to get my Bass Music fix.
Rola: i moved from home soo i dont have that any more, but now with this room i do. if that makes sense
jessipedia: hahaha, where is everyone located?
sigmund void: baltimore here
D M I L L Z: I am here in So Cal
Loxxie: Chicago
Nokier: jackson, mississippi here
skeughh: san franciscoooooo
digerati: Missoula, MT
CoJack: AZ
Bo Peep (TNP): Philly.
bentona: MO
wolrs: LA
bezerkeley: Berkeley, CA
Rola: Ft. Lauderdale
trees: bay areaaa
jessipedia: oh wow, so you all really are from everywhere
disk: Virginia!
Bo Peep (TNP): Yerp.
Nokier: lol ell yea
D M I L L Z: I have to say this is the coolest bunch of people I have met online. All walks of life

jessipedia: Don played me something that VYGR made yesterday, do many of you make your own music?

skeughh: some of us do
disk: Yeah a few of us do.
VYGR: Oh did he?
jessipedia: indeed he did :)
skeughh: i didnt know vygr did
VYGR: Hehskeughh: SEND ME THAT SHIT
Rola: and some of us inspire other to want to
sigmund void: ^^
trees: hehe i still have some old vygr tunes in my queue :p
Loxxie: hahaha vygr needs to play more of his tunes :P
Rola: VY u want to come up haha
bezerkeley: Always love originals
Rola: ;)

jessipedia: Does having this room effect the way you make your music? Or, the way you think about it?

VYGR: No thanks, I’m good down here.
sigmund void: definitely for me, been experimenting with 2 step a lot more instead of minimal dubstep
CoJack: i get a lot of inspiration every day for tunes that are WIPs
Nokier: yeah so much potential
digerati: The genre mix would influence production I would think… Lots to pick & choose from
jessipedia: do you ever find it hard to step up and spin something you’re working on?
Bo Peep (TNP) started playing “I Am (Produced By TRC)” by TRC, Trim
CoJack: no everybody is so supportive
sigmund void: ^
digerati: and everyone making tunes knows whatsss uuuupp
trees: ey funk
Rola: yup we dont judge like that
F u n k: hey trees
Loxxie: funk!
VYGR: Hey Funk!
Rola: whats up Funk
F u n k: morning guys
jessipedia: Before tt how did you get feedback on your songs?
Rola: Soundcloud or forums but tt.fm allows us to talk bout the track in real time
sigmund void: soundcloud for me, emailing friends, etc.
VYGR: A lot of my friends are also producing and even if they don’t produce they can give you feedback.
skeughh: yea i never showed anyone besides a few friends
disk: Soundcloud mostly
Nokier started playing “Street Halo” by Burial
Rola: ya u can get a whole room of opinions here and take what u want

jessipedia: Where were you the last time you heard something and though “Man, I have to play that on tt!”?

Bo Peep (TNP): LOL.
Nokier: probably here
D M I L L Z: everyday
sigmund void: @nokier XD
skeughh: yup
digerati: Every.Day!
Bo Peep (TNP): Never miss an opportunity.
D M I L L Z: I am constantly stealing music from VY
disk: lol all the time, luckly we can also share music through our facebook group if we find something we really enjoy
Rola: yep everyday
Nokier: i hear some pretty chill future garage in the chillout mixer every now and then
trees: jess: i was on soundcloud like 5 mins ago :p
VYGR: There are a lot of websites with regular podcasts, album reviews, interviews etc, such as Fact, xlr8r or Pitchfork. There are also web radios and live streams. Rinse.fm, Sub.fm or GetDarker.com for example. And of course Soundcloud & Mixcloud are a good source for new tunes.
Bo Peep (TNP): This is such a good place to test out tracks for live gigs, honestly. If people here dig a random new track, I’ve found that I can usually go out in the real world and have it be effective, too.
Rola: in order: go to fav websites get new tunes, listen to them, then go to TT.fm :)
sigmund void: @rola totally, just bought a bunch of new shit today and thought about this room haha
jessipedia: So are you all just constantly trawling for cool new stuff
skeughh: yes we are addicts
Bo Peep (TNP): Always want to stay on the new stuff.
Rola: yup then when u play it u can find out how really new your tune is! ;)
Bo Peep (TNP): I think that stems from a lot of us being actual DJ’s outside of tt.fm, though…
josh(ua): ^part of the reason I hang out here
Bo Peep (TNP): We’re always flying through new music, anyway.
Rola: truth im a IRL DJ :)
Nokier: yeah a lot of us are actual dj’s and producers
digerati: or those wishing we were ;-)
skeughh: seems like in someones not a bedroom producer on here they are a dj at some level
Rola: after tt.fm i want to produce now, see what it does!?

jessipedia: If you could change something about Turntable to make it more dj friendly what would it be?

Nokier: effects? lol that would be too annoying
Loxxie: lol built in mixer
VYGR: I miss that we can’t actually mix our tunes. :P
Bo Peep (TNP): That would be…
digerati: Haha, for this genre perhaps the rewwwind (aka starting the track from the beggining)
Bo Peep (TNP): So awesome…
josh(ua): I agree
bentona: Playlist management, and tools to actually mix.
trees: +1 at rewind
josh(ua): I’ve pulled of some awesome transitions, but a mixing feature would be nice to enable between users
Rola: ya imagine if eveyone could mix into eachother tracks! but thats prolly alot
trees started playing “London Lights” by Buzzlin

jessipedia: You mentioned that you have a fb group, how does that help you keep things going?

digerati: Keeps things fresh. Always have tunes on the radar you wouldnt have heard othewise
trees: we can post tunes, mixes, whatever we want to the FB group
josh(ua): I think the FB group has help solidify our user base of fans make it more personal
bentona: We can have endless, pointless arguments about genres.
Bo Peep (TNP): And we do. :P
jessipedia: What kind of things do you argue over?
josh(ua): Skrillex vs Excision for example :P
josh(ua): no I kid
Bo Peep (TNP): Lol. Jokes.
Rola: just people flexing their knowledge of genres pretty much ;)
josh(ua): we’ve had a big name debate
VYGR: What is Future Garage? Haha
josh(ua): what to call the room
Bo Peep (TNP): It’s usually semantics. What is “Future Garage”? “Post Dubstep”? “Bass Music”? They’re all such broad, generic names. And we argue about what really “constitutes” them all the time.
jessipedia: ah, show offs :)
trees: “post dubstep” heh
Rola: future bass
digerati: It has begun.. see what you did Jess!
jessipedia: What is Post Dubstep? What would that even be…
Bo Peep (TNP): Lol… and now you know why we fight over it.
Rola: picture rock n roll and ALLLLL the sub genres and sub sub genres. it gets a lil intense. ya who’s pop rock who’s hardcore, it all applies for bass music
sigmund void: electronic music has so many sub genres it’s not even funny
sigmund void: DNB alone i can think of like 10

jessipedia: are genres important to your understanding of the music? Many other rooms I’ve talked to have kind of written them off…

josh(ua): yes and no. I think the history is important.
sigmund void: to a degree
digerati: There have been these “hard lines” in electronice music up until the last few years, but it is progressing so fast genres dont apply anymore…:
Nokier: yes but i believe a track or artist can have multiple genres associated with them
Loxxie: Yeah I think it is helpful for us to be able to communicate about different types of sounds but used more like guidelines
disk: I think that genres are important, we don’t allow brostep here
Rola: that is correct
trees: sometimes it’s fun/insightful to learn the historical/musical context tho
Bo Peep (TNP): True, no Brostep.
Rola: aka Skrillex for example big no no. id rather go listen to a dial up modem.
CoJack started playing “Acid Test” by Tessela
Loxxie: LOL rola
Rola: thats what it is
Loxxie: omg
josh(ua): ahahah
josh(ua): modestep
Loxxie: XD
sigmund void: faucetstephttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPED-TL7hE4

jessipedia: How did everyone here discover this kind of music originally?

Loxxie: I heard it going to underground parties in chicago.
josh(ua): IDM and electronic music in general
VYGR: I have been spinning & listening to Jungle and DnB since the mid 90s. I always loved UK Garage, Dub & Reggae too. The first Dubstep tunes I heard in the early 2000s where much influenced by all these genres, but with a much ‘heavier’ bass. I just really love bass. Haha.
josh(ua): internet
disk: I used to listen to a lot of Psytrance, house and underworld, Progression of styles..looking for new, fresh, different, GOOD. And tons of Jungle music when i was younger
Bo Peep (TNP): Started listening to old skool Garage way back, then got into Dubstep and Tropical Bass. DnB/Jungle, too.
Rola: i went from Dnb for the last 10 years and evolved to this. see alot of people just keep refining their taste til its come down to this.

jessipedia: What is it about this kind of music that moves your soul?

digerati: BASS. depth. space.
Nokier: drum n bass
F u n k: versatility
disk: the darkness
Loxxie: ^
sigmund void: ^
sigmund void: tension, weight
digerati: vibez
josh(ua): its so flexible - the bpm. 70/140 ish, can do so much
Rola: and if dubstep was , say to slow for u, u might lean toward the future garage side of things
bentona: For me it’s the rhythm and the way the bass drives the rhythm. A lot of electronic music has simplistic rhythms or doesn’t have the sound to really make you feel it.

jessipedia: What’s the best song that you’ve heard in this room?

VYGR: Every original tune.
Loxxie: oh wow how can one choose only one
wolrs: oh yee a chart would be cool. top play chart and top awesomes
CoJack: ya tt needs a chart for each room
sigmund void started playing “Phatty Drummer” by Skream
Rola: oh i can give u best tune of that day MAYBe…
VYGR: All the Clicks & Whistle tunes for example are dope.
disk: Anything juke for me
Nokier: such a hard question
jessipedia: ok, if you were making a room mix, what would you put on it?
josh(ua): “another girl” - song of 2011
digerati: This room IS the best song ive heard
Bo Peep (TNP): :D
disk: Everything from Deadboy to burial to skream to mala to DJ nate to Hesel audio
CoJack: we like us some krampfhaft
disk: hessle
VYGR: It would be a year long mix I think.
jessipedia: hahaha
AKfyah: ahoy, its been a while, tt room. its poppin in hur.
trees: hey ak
VYGR: Hey AK
Loxxie: phaeleh, scuba, author.
trees: silkie, digital mystikz/mala, jack sparrow

jessipedia: ok, I think that’s it, anyone have anything else to add?

sigmund void: best room ever
disk: big ups to tt.fm
jessipedia: awww, thanks guys! but it’s you who make it awesome
digerati: so.much.good.music
josh(ua): this is a community, not just a room imo
Loxxie: I love my ttfm fam!
Rola: tt.fm i love u, my gf hates all the time i spend with u

If this seems like a room for you, check it out!
