New Features!

On Tuesday, we rolled out not one but TWO new features!

First, we’ve been hearing a lot of user feedback since we introduced the zoom feature. To accommodate some, we’ve added a button to disable zoom and another to stop animations. Find it in the drop-down menu, just right of “Switch Room”.

Second, you can now see your fans and those you’ve fanned! When you click on these numbers in your profile or others’ profiles, you will be able to see the avatars and names of people who are fans and fanned. And, with this new feature, you can fan/unfan people without being in the same room, an additional perk!

Notice some new things on turntable.fm today? Well, you’re not going crazy— we did make some sweet changes.

Starting today, you can do lots of new things in the rooms.

First, we added a brand new zoom feature in all the rooms. Feel free to now get up close and personal with the DJs or catch a whole party from the back of the room.

Second, you can now pick a song right from turntable.fm! Look for the purple piki.fm logo in the song board.

Try these out now! We hope you’ll like these updates as much as we do.

Knife Party!

Last night was, to say the least, a big night for turntable.fm and #AnonFM.

At 9PM ET, Knife Party stopped by #AnonFM to stream their upcoming EP, Haunted House. The house was jam-packed with lots of eager listeners and awesome starting and closing acts such as Butch Clancy, KitFysto, and TutTutChild.

Then around 9:50, the room peaked at 2,482 simultaneous listeners, breaking the site-wide record for the most users in a single room at a time! This crushed the previous record of 1,528 users which was also set by Knife Party in #AnonFM.

As Dan mentioned in the room’s chat, we broke another record last night: the volume of our office speakers, which wasn’t even turned down during Knife Party’s Rick Roll.

DC Area Meet Up to See Calvin Harris

Last Saturday, turntabler Matty Spencer (tt name: AStateOfMatty) organized and hosted a DC area meet up.

The group kicked off the day by exploring the annual Cherry Blossom Festival on the National Mall. Then, the group headed to Hawk ‘n Dove, a bar and restaurant near the Capitol Building, to meet and mingle with more turntablers. The real fun though began when the group arrived at EchoStage around 10PM to see Calvin Harris and dance the night away.

Memory Waves - A Turntable.fm Festival Presented by Youtube.com/DJ and Chill or be Chilled

Yesterday, Turntable.fm, in collaboration with YouTube.com/DJ and Chill or be Chilled, hosted Memory Waves, a 12 hour festival featuring a bunch of up and coming DJs who spin and create chillout and downtempo music. To date, it was the largest user-curated festival in our short history, peaking at 1,104 simultaneous listeners.

During the 12 hour non stop music stream, Ulrich Schnauss, Tycho, Com Truise, Bluetech, Shigeto and more, swung by and all played some of their new, old, and even unreleased tracks for the over 19,000 users who hung out with us.

We have to hand it to TT user YouTube.com/DJ who organized the whole event and really made it a success.

Introducing Turntable Contextual Gifvertising

NEW YORK—(BUSINESS WIRE) — April 1, 2013 — Turntable.fm, Inc. today announced that it has created a revolutionary new advertising service. Turntable Contextual Gifvertising™ is a dynamic and engaging new way for advertisers to reach consumers.

“The turntable community has always been passionate about gifs” said Jonathan Kupferman, Turntable Head of Gifvertising Operations. “Now with Contextual Gifvertising™ we can help bridge the gap between what our community wants and what advertisers can deliver. Starting today, when a user enters a turntable room they will see highly targeted gifs related to the conversations that they are already having. For example, when users talk about “doing the dougie” they may see a sponsored instructional gif from Kate Upton. While discussing swimming lessons they may be presented with a corgi in a branded life vest. This form of advertising, like the discussion taking place, is lively and captivating. Extensive testing has shown that users prefer ads with kitten gifs over text ads 93.4% of the time.

Using a unique combination of technology and intellectual property, Turntable has developed the next generation of advertising. “When we first started working on Gifvertising people thought it was a joke,” said Turntable VP of Engineering Cailin Nelson. “After months of intense research we developed a comprehensive GIFID™ system that allows us to deliver the right ad, at the right time, to the right user. Introducing Guest Accounts!

We’ve all been there… that moment when you’re on your way to check out some cool link your friend sent you.. and then there it is… the dreaded registration form. Type in an email? Choose a username? Argh - but I’m in a hurry!

Requiring registration for new users has pros and cons. Requiring some level of real information from users encourages a sense of belonging to the community. But, of course, the major con is that it discourages users from joining our community in the first place.

In an effort to find a good balance today we are very pleased to introduce Guest Accounts to turntable. New users may now enter a turntable room without going through registration. However, in order to not drown our community with a sudden influx of guests we’ve put in a few limits:

Guests may not chat.

Guests may not DJ.

Guests may not send or receive private messages.

If guest want to do these things, they will need to complete an in-room registration form, and which point they will magically transform into full-fledged users! You can take a gander at this sign in form at the top of the post.

Also, initially, the guest account functionality can only be accessed by users who enter the site via a direct link to a room. So, for now, you’ll probably mostly see guests hanging out at major artist events.

So, please welcome our guests (but don’t be insulted when they can’t return the favor)!

Turntable At SXSW 2013: Yep Roc Records Showcase @ Continental Club

Earlier this week we announced our rollout of the Turntable.fm Wheels of Steel at SXSW Interactive, and today we’re thrilled to share Turntable’s plans for SXSW Music. Join us for a night of great artists at Austin’s renowned Continental Club, featuring some of Yep Roc Records’ best talents.

SXSW goers can also also join us at the daytime Redeye Residency (718 N. Congress) on March 14 and 15 (10am-5pm). In addition to such amenities as wi-fi and phone-charging stations, we will be hosting some awesome Turntable “In Real Life” parties with the Redeye roster!

Lastly, look out for Team Turntable in front of the Austin Convention Center on the afternoon of Friday 3/15 for a sweet surprise. See you in Austin!
